Asrat Bekele has over 30 years of experience in tax, accounting and auditing.

Asrat is one of the founding partners of ASGB partners, a firm of consultants and auditors that provides advisory service in the areas of finance and taxation as well as audit services to companies planning to invest in Ethiopia as well as those already active in the market. Asrat is the tax partner in the firm and leads the tax practice. He is mainly engaged in provision of financial consultancy services, tax review or tax health check of clients through review of the financial records, tax advice which includes preparation and defence of client protests against tax decisions, transfer pricing documentation, financial and tax due diligence, transaction advisory service, preparation of business and strategic plan. He also provides trainings on Ethiopian tax system.

Asrat was accreditation advisor to MOFEC/the Government of Ethiopia and worked as team member responsible for financial data collection and analysis with CDKN for Ethiopia’s accreditation application to the Adaptation Fund (AF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

Asrat has a very good knowledge of the public sector as he worked as a consultant for the Decentralization Support Activity (DSA) Project under Ministry of Finance and Economic Development that supported reform and decentralization under the civil reform of the Ethiopian Government. Assessing existing systems, training civil servants in the new system and provision of post reform support in implementation of same was the major duty of the project and its consultants.

Asrat started his career as an auditor in the Ethiopian Revenue Authority, where he worked for the following ten years. After leaving the Revenue Authority, he worked as an accountant and tax advisor to the private sector and in various consultancy assignments funded by development partners. Throughout the span of his career, Asrat’s assignments were closely related with the tax system of the country. He was a member of a working group that was tasked to review the income tax law in force for decades at the time, while with the tax authority and contributed his share through various means as a practitioner when a new income tax proclamation was issued in 2002. He was also one of the group members who reviewed and provided comment on behalf of ACCA Ethiopia Office and its members at the time of enactment of the current income tax law in 2016.

Asrat also took part in various tax related consultancy assignments. These include a revenue potential study conducted in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State, a study to upgrade the capacity of Institute of Tax and Customs Administration under the Ethiopian Civil Service University undertaken by Crown Agents, a UK based international consultancy firm and consultancy project to improve municipal revenue administration capacity of municipal towns in Gambela Regional State.
